To ensure my old HDs are unreadable, I prefer to use a metal drill bit and make lots of holes in the drive, then soak it in dishwater for an hour, then leave it outside in the weather for a while before dropping it off at the transfer station as scrap metal. I saw a horrific news story once about large corporations selling their old digital copiers and printers to bulk buyers, who eventually shipped them off to Russia. Great! How much info did they just hand over? I will never copy my tax returns at Staples.
