And actually, it must have still been deleting the cached photos, because 20 minutes later, all the pictures I *hadn't* deleted were back--but I've turned Google backup off and when I deleted one of today's photos, I didn't get the "almost full, this will be permanent" message. Yay! One oddity is it's not asking me if I want to save changes when it offers to fix lighting--just to save to a copy. I suspect that has to do with turning off Google backup.
