It sounds like the first issue you're having is being able to read the
disks. Have you tried them on your friend's external floppy? They have to
be in a format where the computer can recognize the information. As an
example, the 3.5 floppies of early Macs, PCs, and the external drive I had
for my long-ago Tandy 100 were not cross compatible.

Once you find a machine that can read the disks (assuming they are actually
still good), here are three things can try:

   1. Install the Professional Write program and see if you can export text
   or RTF files
   2. Use Word's Open Any File option and expect to see the raw text
   surrounded top and bottom by some code garbage you can get rid of
   3. Get a copy of Nisus Writer, a Mac word processing program that has
   extremely powerful macro and file conversion capabilities. I believe Nisus
   is still in business and no longer charging for the product. See if it will
   open the files.
