<div dir="ltr">It sounds like the first issue you're having is being able to read the disks. Have you tried them on your friend's external floppy? They have to be in a format where the computer can recognize the information. As an example, the 3.5 floppies of early Macs, PCs, and the external drive I had for my long-ago Tandy 100 were not cross compatible.<div><br></div><div>Once you find a machine that can read the disks (assuming they are actually still good), here are three things can try:</div><div><ol><li>Install the Professional Write program and see if you can export text or RTF files</li><li>Use Word's Open Any File option and expect to see the raw text surrounded top and bottom by some code garbage you can get rid of</li><li>Get a copy of Nisus Writer, a Mac word processing program that has extremely powerful macro and file conversion capabilities. I believe Nisus is still in business and no longer charging for the product.
