Unless you want to invest BIG bucks in a content serving system (which negates most benefits of distributing books as PDF files), you can't prevent people from sharing the files themselves. The best you can do is encrypt the content and place restrictions on various activities. PDF-Xchange Pro, which I use to create, edit and read PDF documents, offers fairly granular permissions for printing, editing and content extraction. You can assign one password to open a document and another to modify permissions. Just how secure PDF passwords are is questionable, given the large number of sites claiming to provide PDF password removal, and in any case, you can't prevent someone from passing along passwords with files, nor can you prevent screen capture of individual pages. Password encryption should be enough to prevent abuse by casual readers, but will not deter real experts from extracting content.
