Yes, ALL kids above 5th grade really need some exposure to computer
programming. Not necessarily with the idea of becoming professional computer
programmers, but universal "true computer literacy" is a good thing, just as
universal natural language literacy is considered a good thing. By "true
computer literacy" I mean a minimual basic understanding of computer
programming. So yes, I would second the idea of intalling a full Linux
environment (like Mint), complete with some basic tools for programming:
Python, gcc, gcc-c++, Perl, and Emacs. Any standard full Linux install will
already have some of this.
