[Hidden-tech] Mac OS question

Since this topic is the main subject of so much of our services these days,
I wanted to add some things to what others have mentioned:

   - A rollback / downgrade from a current MacOS to an earlier one is not
an easy one, particularly since Time Machine and Migration Assistant from
the newer OS won't support downgrading. It's a manual process.
   - If you have a pristine and full backup *made with the previous OS*,
you *may* be able to erase and install the desired OS onto your boot
volume (typically your internal drive), then use the Migration Assistant in
   that circumstance.
   - If it's been some time since the upgrade, then *using a third volume*, you
can manually install the older MacOS onto it, migrate your data manually
from your backup onto the third volume, designate it as your boot drive to
ensure everything's working well, then finally erasing your target volume
(typically your internal drive) and cloning the working 3rd volume back
onto your boot drive. Suggested apps to use are Carbon Copy Cloner and
   ChronoSync.
   - 32-bit apps notwithstanding, Macs with rotational hard drives suffer
performance-wise under Mojave and Catalina. This would be an opportune time
to upgrade to a solid state drive. Your computer will run faster than it
ever did before, and SSDs are actually quite affordable nowadays. It's far
and away the most common service we perform. For a more in-depth analysis
of why the APFS file system (introduced in High Sierra for SSDs, for HDDs
starting with Mojave) performs so poorly on rotational drives,
check out this
   article
   <https://bombich.com/blog/2019/09/12/analysis-apfs-enumeration-performance-on-rotational-hard-drives>
   .

So why did Apple do this? There are some rather esoteric advantages to the
new format, but it was far from necessary to impose it on lower end Macs.
The bottom line is their bottom line: they sell more computers if an OS
upgrade makes yours slower. It's downright shameful.
