We just replaced a dying hard drive in a 2012 MacBook Pro w ssid drive, and hope to get more life out of it.

TJ at left click amherst can tell you if this is worth doing, in your case.

I'm trying to figure out which of these two models I should buy to replace my dying 2012 McBookPro:

I have a fairly recent 1TB SSD (SATA) drive in my current Mac, which I plan to convert to an external, and thus will probably go with the smaller drive capacity for the built-in. I upgraded a while ago to 16 GB RAM but it doesn't look like the RAM chips will work in either of these two models. I don't do a lot of video or other hardware-intensive processes (maybe a few times a year), but I do tend to have lots of apps and windows open at once.

The regular MacBook:

  *   Has a better display
  * Can be upgraded from 8 to 16 GB RAM (though it doesn't say how much that costs)
  * Uses the same kind of USBC port that my Nexus Android phone uses—but only seems to have one (it's not clear if the power port is separate from that).

MacBook Air

  * Has more ports: two USB3 (I imagine that's the typical USB port that I have on my external keyboard etc?) and something called a Thunderbolt, as well as an SDXC card slot (I have an older SD card in my camera, and I use the SD slot on my current Mac to move high volumes of photos over, but I pretty much only use that camera when I am traveling, preferring my mobile's camera in general—would this slot work with that card?)
  *   Has an HD camera
  * Costs $300 less (and probably another $200 less if I choose the 16GB option on the other one)

I don't know enough to know the differences in processors, graphics chips, or batteries and power cords to say anything rational about them.

The apps I use the most are Word, Excel, PowerPoint (with lots of graphics), Chrome, Firefox, and Skype or Zoom. Whatever I buy should be pretty functional at least five years out.

What would you do in my situation, and why?

Thanks!
