[Hidden-tech] domain expiration issues

Rob,
you raise an important issue, How to keep domains that are important for
a company (or individual)

1) NEVER have the email on the domain the same as the domain - use a
gmail.com email

2) NEVER use an individuals email for the domain contact, no matter what
that domain on the email is.
People leave, people ignore emails or are on vacation.
Use a 'role' account such as accting-ourcompany at gmail.com or
domain-ourcompany at gmail.com if you have many.

3) Use auto-renewal on the important ones, of course make sure the
credit card is updated.

4) This is a tricky one, some companies are doing 4-5 year (or more)
renewals.  I find renewing each year, esp with auto-renew is safer. If
your domain doesn't need renewing for a multi-year period, is actually
riskier.

A new issue that I have yet to figure out, is that the latest ICANN
rules reduce the 45 renewal period for 'premium domains' -- -exactly
what that means and which domains it applies to are still a bit of a
mystery.. SO don't let your domains expire.

I’m not the one at my firm who resolved it favorably, within a 45(?) day recapture window I believe, but my point is that if such registrars, by some wild fluke, just happen to use only for domain expiration warnings email servers with dirty IP addresses that are likely to go to spam folders or be blocked by a web host, well then someone stands to gain profit from a percentage of desperate past owners. So checking all one’s (clients’) domain expiration dates and email recipients seems one of the many things for which a recurring calendar reminder makes sense.
