Stacy, more information, like the domain name, is needed. The official process is 45 days to renew if you own it and 30 more grace period look at https://www.icann.org/resources/pages/expired-2013-05-03-en BUT the registry who handles the domain might have variations to those policies AND some will allow reserving domains if not renewed, there are also services that will keep trying to grab a domain once it gets deleted. Someone here might have some suggestions as to those services. The easiest method is to try to buy it, which, from your description doesn't sound likely. It's always an iffy process unless there is a legal trademark involved.
