Hi Ira,

Do you have a lot of items on your desktop? That slows down performance, move documents to the “documents” folder, if you do. Also, if you have a lot of applications that are launching on startup, that will slow things down, especially if there are ones that are syncing at the same time. 

If you use Dropbox or Google Drive, those also slow things down as they sync up on launch. Check your “Login item” in preferences (Users & Groups > Login Items) to see how many things you have launching at restart, deselect those that are not needed and can be launched via the dock after you restart. 

If you use Mail with several different account on IMAP, that slows things down too (more syncing). You can use Command + Shift + Delete on your inbox to delete the trash, that helps speed that up too. 

Those are a few things to check, there are many more. Some good posts on all this if you Google around.
