I generally stay out of these discussions because I mostly host myself
(server at Crocker)
However my most recent experience with commercial hosting was with Media
Temple and I was pleasantly surprised with their grid service -- we had
about 10 (fairly large active) wordpress sites on a $5/mon account,
since moved up to $20/mon, still pretty reasonable. We could do direct
(ssh) access as well as control panel access.
(and yes, HT is on my server at crocker)
