[Hidden-tech] (w13) How much would you pay me?

This is an interesting question as Mass recently passed a bill that would
make it illegal to ask somebody what they used to make. I'm not sure when
that will take effect but that is at least tangential to this question, and
may even be covered by it. A recruiter or lawyer on the list would be
better able to answer if the new law covers that question as well.

Prior to that law I was taught to put that question off, if you can, until
the second interview along with all questions you may have about benefits.
The task of the first interview is to sell yourself to the person/company
looking to hire. The second interview (generally, some companies have a
multi-phase process) is all about the company selling themselves to you,
including the pay and benefits part.

Andy.

There is a newsletter from asktheheadhunter.com that has info on this
question. The author give advice to people about the interview process and
feels strongly that you should not answer that question- especially in the
early stages of a job discussion, and provides answers that allow you to
turn the question around. What you were paid previously should not
determine your value to the company in a new and different job. Good luck!
