[Hidden-tech] iPhone travel questions for Ireland

Tom,

The best thing to do is to check directly with your carrier. Wifi calling
can be set up on a number of free/nearly free services if your carrier
doesn't do it. You will want to disable roaming and data roaming to ensure
that the phone service itself isn't used accidentally (or that you've paid
ahead for international service to limit the costs).

Note that "free wifi" in cafes/public spots in Ireland may require
registration with one of several services, and that lengths are typically
limited. If the point is to check in once a day while in their hotel, wifi
calling is likely to work just fine.

If you happen to have an unlocked phone, and this trip is for more than a
week or so, I recommend Tesco Mobile (my Irish phone provider, for many
years there).

Pay-as-you-go rates to the US are 2c/minute for calls, 14c/text (in Euros):

1GB of data is 5 Euros:
http://www.tescomobile.ie/add-ons.aspx
and smaller amounts for less. No subscription or contract is needed.

Tesco is a food store, and they're located throughout the country:

SIMs, last I checked, were available at the counter.

PS - I recommend this wiki for phone/data advice worldwide:
