The issue is that it is much less feature rich, that some configuration options are not possible, and that the menus, etc are all different. The distributed access is nice and the fees are irrelevant--as you say, you need to update QuickBooks every couple of years anyway. Take a look online at comments about it. Most of the people who used the desktop version dislike the online version. I don't think it is a question of not liking the new, but real disappointment with what it does. I know that every time I have to work on it, I find it frustrating that something that is easy on the desktop is either buried or not possible online. Curious is you say the online version of QB is not universally loved because of the subscription fee, or because it does not work as well as standalone version. I'm assisting a nonprofit that is considering online QB because it gives multiple people visibility of current information, for fees not much different than standalone purchase every few years. If you use Payroll, access your bank/credit card accounts, etc., you will have to upgrade QuickBooks every three years or so. Just another service from a once user-centric company. The argument, I suppose, is that external connections change, so QB has to change. But the reality is that if you can keep using your old copy, you won't buy a new copy, but will expect regular updates. And the new web version of QB is a subscription based product which is not universally loved. People seem to like FreshBooks a lot. The down side of non-QuickBooks products is lack of features.
