Stacy, Sudden shutdowns of the computer are more likely a hardware issue than a software issue. Software is a possibility, just less likely for sure. Hardware issues: 1. You can run apple diagnostics by holding down Option+D when you turn on the machine (https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202731) This is a basic diagnostic suite, but it does catch some simple problems and report the error codes so you have more info. 2. Your symptom description matches the issues discussed in the Apple Macbook Pro Recall. Sudden shutdowns/restarts on certain models (listed here: https://www.apple.com/support/macbookpro-videoissues/) are caused by video issues and covered under free repair through apple or authorized warranty provider (Yes Computers, Apple Store Holyoke, etc). 3. Out of warranty unknown issues - Feel free to bring it into us. We work on a lot of macbook pros with a whole range of hardware issues and would be happy to help. Software issues: 1. Malwarebytes has a good free mac spyware scanner that can help with basic removal/cleanup. 2. We do recommend antivirus on All macs these days, we are seeing a lot more viruses. We have had the best luck with and recommend AVG Free Antivirus for Mac. Good luck!
