[Hidden-tech] USB external hard drives?

Hi Robin
I can't speak for other back-up systems, but I am using several 1.5TB and 2TB usb external drives very successfully. I have one connected all the time that is dedicated to time machine and two others that are connected all the time for redundant manual back-ups (so I can find files by client rather than by date). These all show up as icons on my desktop so I can do drag and drop copies among all of them. I also have an additional drive that is not connected to the system all the time—I store it somewhere else and do periodic, usually once a month, manual back-ups.
The down side of any single drive, as has been said, is that it will fail eventually. But these usb drives are so handy and so reasonably priced, that for me the convenience wins out. I just make sure to test that they are working, always have several copies of everything, and always have a new one ready to go. And when I travel, I often take the time machine drive and one of the other back-ups with me because they are so small and portable.
This is a system that wouldn't necessarily work for everyone because you have to be super diligent about your redundancy and about testing your backups. But, being kind of a control freak, it works really well for me.
	Lynne
