The short form of the 'server aspect' is just like any web server or cloud server - only on your local network. The real catch is to work with Time Machine -- and the synology is designed to support it - see: http://www.synology.com/en-us/support/tutorials/481 Frankly getting a 2-3 TB external backup drive is very dangerous compared to a system like Synology -- a drive unit has multiple drives in a RAID configuration - the data is distributed so if one fails (which all drives do over time), you replace that one, and the system rebalances. So no matter what system you get, make sure it has multiple drives in a RAID configuration.
