[Hidden-tech] USB external hard drives?

I bought a Synology DiskStation to back up home videos etc.  I'm having a
hard time understanding the server aspect of it.

I back up with Time Machine locally and Crash Plan to the  cloud.

Would a  2-3 TB USB external drive be simpler for me.  Could my Imac see it
all the time?   Could I browse for drag and drop to upload?
