[Hidden-tech] Questions Re: Win 8.1 and Win XP...

Hi David -

Windows 8 is an even numbered Microsoft operating system - it will never be
ready for prime time. When the underlying code base is ready for prime
time, they will slap an odd number on it and tweak the user interface
enough to call it a new OS. The even numbered releases seem to be geared
toward pacifying Wall Street's demand for a software release. The odd
numbered releases are the proper implementation of the new ideas - it's the
solid code that arises from the wide-spread beta test. (See for example
WinME as beta to WinXP and Vista as beta to 7.)

As to the impact of running XP after patch Tuesday in April, the best
written article I've seen is this one:
www.zdnet.com/microsoft-security-research-paints-bleak-picture-for-xp-users-7000022537/
- the Windows code base is deep, iterative, and extremely complex. No OS
is ever "fixed" anymore - there's far too much complexity. The scenario
the author at ZDNet puts forward isn't conjecture - it happened to Win2k
after Microsoft pulled the support plug.

If you're not dependent on actually running code that has to run on a
Windows machine, and you just want to extend the life of hardware that may
not be bright enough to run Win7, I'd suggest running some Linux variant -
test drive a few LiveCDs and find one you like that does the things you do
now with the XP machine, then move to the one that suits you best before
April ends.
