I think it's more about all the paperwork you have to do with the state and
feds and unemployment.  While it's not that hard, the deadlines and time to
do it aren't worth it for the $30/month you'd pay someone else to do it.

We use  http://pioneerpayroll.com/ .  They are affordable and real guys.
 Kurt the owner is a really nice guy.  And he's local.  It's not a big
corporation.  Plus what I found trying to do it myself was you couldn't
easily do direct deposit.  I do it for 3 employees.  And it wasn't bad
doing it by myself, but now I don't even think about it.  I tell them the
hours and everything else just gets done.  W-4 come in Jan, copies of the
filings come every quarter.
