Some generally things to keep in mind:

1) All two-letter codes .co, .tv, .uk, etc are all controlled by individual 
governments.   Some are restricted to use by residents/business in the home 
countries and others have been opened up to global registration for income 
purposes of those countries.

For instance .tv is a great income source for the small island nation of Tuvalu.

And .co is controlled by Colombia, South America in reality.

Whereas .co.uk relevant for companies in the United Kingdom as much as .com is 
for companies in the US.

2) The endings of domains will continue to fragment, just as phone numbers have 
gotten longer and longer over the decades and area codes split, etc.

They've been internationalized in the last year, so there are now even 
dot-endings in non-english/latin characters.

3) There are no formal restrictions about who can own .net, .org, .biz.

4) Choosing a domain name is both a social-cultural thing as well as something 
that impacts how search engines find your site.
