Depends on a lot of things: Are you in the USA only? If you are trying to do business in canada and france, you might want to show commitment to those markets by getting the .ca and .fr (in addition to your .com). Are you extremely local business only (like a plumber or handyman)? Find out who has all of the other extensions. If none of them are competitive with you, then you don't care about people finding them instead of you. (You could even make a deal with them for refering leads to you.) Is your product political or patriotic? TaxAttorney.us or flags.us or ElectionNotes.us or PropertyLaw.us might actually make more sense. Even if you are local (like a restaurant), if you think you might someday franchise or widely distribute private label products (your popular barbecue sauce) then you must have the .com Is the domain name brandable or generic? If brandable, then perhaps you can get away with an odd extension. For example, if everybody in Newark NJ knows your longstanding brick-and-mortar local auto parts business by the name of Polk Street Parts, and PolkStreetParts.com is owned by a kitchen appliance repair parts business in Chicago, you might go for the .net and rebrand as The Polk Street Parts Network. But If the domain name is generic, you MUST have the dot-com. Soup.com is worth millions. But it's because of the type-in traffic. If you are competing with Campbells, there is no point in owning soup.biz nor soup.org, etc. Jordan Lee Wagner Trupod Internet Services sales at Trupod.com On 4/13/2012 9:28 AM, Charles Uchu Strader wrote: > ** Be sure to fill out the survey/skills inventory in the member's area. > ** If you did, we all thank you. > > > > > Some generally things to keep in mind: > > 1) All two-letter codes .co, .tv, .uk, etc are all > controlled by individual governments.
