[Hidden-tech] Alternative to Quickbooks

Reviews on Amazon can be useful, but you have to be careful about taking
everything they say at face value without additional research.

Many glowing book reviews on Amazon come from shills promoting a title,
and many negative software reviews come from an irate minority of users
who couldn't get a program to work the way they expected it to.

I don't need double entry bookkeeping and so have used Quicken Home &
Business for over 20 years. I keep and manage all of my banking,
invoicing and investment accounts in it. It is wonderful for that.

I do NOT use it as a data entry system (grabbing transactions from my
accounts online) because I find that it takes nearly as long to check
those as it does for me to enter things myself. Also, my approach lets
me catch any issues before become problems.

Many of the gripes have to do with data acquisition, which is as much
due to individual financial institutions as to the software itself. The
biggest complaint is that online links won't work after a few years if
you do not buy a newer version. I find that argument ridiculous -- If
you want someone else to do your work for you, you should be prepared to
pay for their service.
