I'd suggest that you use an IMAP-capable client (like Thunderbird). 
Then download *all* of your gmail to you own computer (and be sure to
make a backup!).  Then delete all but some *critical* subset of your
E-Mail off Google's servers.  You really should get in the habit not
keeping more than a few *months* on mail on Google's servers -- you
really should be keeping older messages on a local (and backed up)
archive.
