About ten years ago I worked on a project with a professor of entrepreneurship at Babson College who explained in detail as part of this project why it's next to impossible to come up with a credible number on that question.  At that time, no established entity that was keeping statistics was counting people and businesses in a way that gave a reliable answer to that question - not the SBA, not the IRS, not the Commerce Department, not the census, nobody.

Unless that's changed in the meantime, all you're going to find is more or less wild guesses.
