Hi Fern, The simplest thing to do is buy a Zoom H2 or H4 recorder and do the recording to that. The Zoom recorders are a great deal for the money and are easy to use (except for the too small screen). Then you can edit in Fission, Audacity, GarageBand, ProTools, etc, etc... Fission is an inexpensive tool that contains no filters or compressor, but does is excellent for basic editing including: splits, fade in/out, normalize, +/- gain on selections, etc. It's BIG advantage is that it is lossless. It works directly in the original file format and saves to the original format; no proprietary intermediary formats to deal with. MP3 in, MP3 out; WAV in, WAV out, etc. Of course you can use QuickTime to save in alternate formats if you want to. It will also open a 2GB file very quickly, because it's not doing any transcoding.
