The trick with Twitter is to start out by finding search terms that interest you. I'm a project manager, so I started by searching for "project management" in twitter. This led me to the hashtag "PMOT" which the knowledgeable use to tag their tweets as related to project management. Then I started following people who were posting useful information to that hashtag. Thus, Twitter for me is a rich and rewarding use of my time, even connecting me with potential clients. YMMV.
