Hi Andrew,
(We met at Pioneer Valley Local First launch meeting.)

I used to use Tweetdeck but now use Hootsuite because it has everything
Tweetdeck had and more.

For sure, using Twitter.com alone is not useful and I can see why people are
confused by Twitter if they just do that.

I agree with Tish about not posting the same exact thing on multiple places
all the time. Sometimes it's appropriate and I like having that option in
Hootsuite.

It's true that Twitter can be distracting if you're not careful or selective
in what you focus on, but it can also give you access to new people, new
ideas, and some great help. I'll give an example.

I think the most immediate value of Twitter is being able to ask questions
and get answers. And those helpful folks often get business out of it.
That's how I met Kiernan. He answered a tech question I had posted, and next
thing you know, I bought a wireless router from him and then got some PC
repair help from him.

One of the best ways to initially get involved is to search the tag
#westernma to find people posting about local things. Start interacting with
those folks and you'll find your meaningful connections will grow.

Good luck!

Val
