[Hidden-tech] CiviCRM and projects

It is for sure not a default of civicrm.
The CiviCRM module comes with CCK Fields to relate Contacts to a Node
(Project).
>From there you have all the benefits of Drupal, Organic Groups, and Views
etc but it looks like you tried all that.
Though it really seems like it should work. Maybe a few use cases could help
to understand it more?
Other CRMs Salesforce integrates with Drupal and Sugar CRM.
The CiviCRM Chat room and forum are great places as far as local experts go
not sure of others then ourselves, but there is a list here
