Since you all were so great at finding the solution to Tom's email, here's my "stump the chump":

recently installed a router to my modem at home (D-link WBR1310 router, Westell Model 2200 modem).
I can gain access to my network via airport on my MacBook Pro (fall 2008 version, Mac OS 10.5.5), but cannot access the internet. It seems like I'm not the only one, according to the forums, but I couldn't find a solution on the forums. If I plug in an ethernet cable, the internet works just fine. Anyone out there have this issue?

thanks so so much in advance!
Leslie

BINGO! Thank YOU Dave. I just turned on voice over and it went away...You learn something new everyday. That just saved a whole bunch of frustration .....

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU...and thank you hidden tech---i knew it couldn't be a virus-hah!
(now I just gotta find out who turned on "Voice Over" on my computer- might have been me...after reading all those hidden-tech emails about using voice technology...who knows!)

Tom,
Have you checked to see if VoiceOver is enabled? Seeing items listed twice like that usually indicates voiceover is enabled, and it is a "feature" so that the Apple menu items can be used.

Hello folks,

hoping someone out there may be able to help. Just yesterday I started noticing weird black boxes surrounding anything that I click on whether it be a file on my desktop or around the perimeter of a webpage, etc. it goes away when I click on something else...but today it seems getting worse. I'm working on a very new mac pro (desktop) with OS 10.5. This weird behavior would indicate ... dare even mention the word.... "virus".

ALSO- when I click on the apple in top left corner - i see that "Restart", "Shutdown" and "Logout" are listed TWICE in the drop down menu! scary stuff?

The only things I can think of that might be related is
1) I've downloaded a few small utility apps in the last few weeks from version tracker that may be of questionable stability...
2) I started using spaces pretty heavily and noticed some screen anomalies, so I stopped.
3) I turned on "web sharing" in the preferences for a few hours- a couple days ago

I tried disk utility but it didn't find anything ... any hints? hopefully it won't get worse? I've attached 2 screen grabs to show you what I mean.
