Izzy - just as an aside, why don't you just take out the hard drive for the entire time the laptop is away? They can put in a bootable drive from their own inventory while they do the repair. If you're not voiding the warranty by removing the drive to back it up, you're not voiding the warranty by removing the hard drive to keep it out of the hands of people who feel they have to erase it as part of a repair process... right? I'd suggest that, if you can, that you spare yourself the aggravation finding a temp backup. And once your laptop is returned, you will get an external drive to back up to regularly, won't you? And incidentally, an external powered USB case for your 2.5" drive should be readily available if you want to do the backup yourself, now, to any friend's computer who has the room to spare.
