Sounds to me like the monitor is not getting a "wake up" signal from the computer. Of course the cable / connector could be at fault. I have never seen a computer cable that wasn't cheaply built. As used parts. You will be hard pressed to find someone in the computer industry who knows what even goes into a monitor, much less who can use the parts. TV repair is has gone the way of the dodo. (TVs and monitors have a lot in common). To be fair there are probably a few engineers, not based in the far east, who do what is going on inside a monitor.
