Andrew -

I don't have comparative experience but I've been able to do fairly good
OCR conversion of scanned documents in Adobe Acrobat (8). But the issue
is, the quality of OCR for scans is quite variable, so the
searchability, particularly for multi-word phrases, is likely to by
variable.

I've mainly used OCR conversion for reducing hosted PDF file sizes and
cleaning up the appearance of scans, and in limited volume.

If you'll be doing significant volume of document conversion, it is
probably worth your while to learn what options there are and to weigh
cost against work, hassle, and quality of results at your office. I'd
be interested in hearing what you end up doing and how it works in the
office.
