i love the manfrotto 501(3)HDV head and your suggestion..
but outta my budget...

However, thanks to fellow hidden techer, Roman, I went with a nice
substitute from B&H:

Davis & Sanford DAPVALFM18 ProVista Airlift Tripod with FM18 Fluid Head
($250)

It got great reviews on b&h and sells for about 1/2 the price...
seems like it's the "thrifty" person's substitute for the higher end stuff.
