[Hidden-tech] controlling look of emails...

You can send them out in HTML format, but some readers will still receive
them as plaintext, depending on the email reader they are using...

Other than using a service like Constant Contact,
 is there a way to send out broadcast emails 
and still control how the content looks
(photos, typeface,colors, etc.) ?
 
 I have been attaching pdf's 
but that is cumbersome.
