[Hidden-tech] controlling look of emails...

Other than using a service like Constant Contact,
 is there a way to send out broadcast emails 
and still control how the content looks
(photos, typeface,colors, etc.) ?
 
 I have been attaching pdf's 
but that is cumbersome.
