[Hidden-tech] Video file question - Mac

I have a new video camera that saves videos onto my computer in AVI  
file format.

I wanted to import those files into Apple's new iMovie 08 software,  
but I don't have the option. When I try to select the file, the file  
is grayed out, and iMovie doesn't give you the option to import it.

Do I need to change that AVI file into some type of format that my  
iMovie software will recognize? What's the easiest way to do that?
