Here is a trick or two: 1. KEEP the weight under a kilo (2.2 lbs). At least that is a trick for mail coming back, and inter-non-EU-europe. Customs tends to not bother with under kilo packages. 2. Be honest, but keep the declaration slip under the min going to that country. Usually under $25 works. 3. Careful how you do the declaration. If it looks used, it is used. Ask yourself "what would I pay for this?" For example: You read the magazine / book, so it is used & not worth very much. 4. Never write "may be opened for postal inspection" on the package. 5. Never use airmail to Canada. I believe that it forces mail to go by air, which may not be fastest. Surface mail goes by "best way," which may be air. 6. Use Global Priority mail envelopes. I have had a letter get to Germany in 2 1/2 days using the small envelope. 7. If what you are sending has no value to other than the receipent, such as a proposal, declare it as "no commerical value." Ask yourself, does this item have any value to anyone else? Often not. ---- I have been receiving & sending mail to Canada since I was little. Have only had a few problems, but none lately. Expect about a week for delivery to here. The Canadian mail system is slower compared to ours. Yes, stuff does get hung-up in Customs. Declaration may be part of the problem. If it is a gift you are sending, never say something different. Mail to Europe is faster. Here you must use airmail (or Global Priority) if you want any speed. Typically expect 4 to 6 days. Remember you are dealing with people at Customs, who are trying to get the most revenue for their gov't. So, don't make the package look like more than it is. Maria, et al, I just sent over 1 package and three pieces of mail to Ireland. I know that, often, packages can be held over at customs for a while but -- to my understanding -- mail should be delivered right on. If my recipients don't receive my mail, I'll be sure to follow up and add my name to the list of 'packages lost.' All the best and good luck, Jonathan Hohl Kennedy Sunderland -----Original Message----- From: hidden-discuss-bounces at lists.hidden-tech.net [mailto:hidden-discuss-bounces at lists.hidden-tech.net] On Behalf Of Marcia Yudkin Sent: Saturday, 06 January, 2007 4:53 AM To: hidden-discuss at lists.hidden-tech.net Subject: [Hidden-tech] International Mail ** The author of this post was a Good Dobee. ** You too can help the group ** Fill out the survey/skills inventory in the member's area. ** If you did, we all thank you. Anyone else besides me having trouble with packages being sent by USPS to other countries getting delivered? No kidding, I had 5 packages - two to Australia, one to England, one to Canada and one to Israel - go astray since September. In addition, an express envelope from Canada to me sent via Canada Post which should have reached me in two days was, according to the tracking, held up at the US border and took almost a month to reach me. (It contained an international money order for a large amount of money, so this was even worse than the problem with the packages, which contained replaceable merchandise.) I asked the postmaster whether I could be on some kind of watch list. He said no. He keeps telling me he's going to check out the problem - maybe there's a backup in Customs? - but he never has any answers for me. It looks like if I have an important package to send overseas I will need to use UPS instead, since they have door-to-door tracking and USPS doesn't. Any insights, any tips on this?
