The IEEE Consultants' Networks does this very well: I pay $75/yr for the Boston network (about 80 members). For that I get a searchable listing on their web site, and a listing in a directory, when it is published. Problems with it: Folks who understand web design wrote the site. That took lots of time, as they also have a business to run, bread to put on the table, etc. Someone else does the directory. Again same problem. That person isn't paid, and paid work comes first. He, too has a family to feed. But, the business that I get makes it a bargin. I try to do my share of the work, and attempt to be a speaker once a year at the monthly meeting in Lexington. The national Alliance of IEEE Consultants' Networks (AICN), several hundred members, charges $79/yr. For this I get a searchable web site. In the past there was a booklet, then a CD, but I haven't seen the CD in a few years. Business thru this avenue was very good when there was a booklet. Dropped with the CD only and the 2003 recession. Now there is less business...and no CD. Possibly there is something there... The CT IEEE Consultants charges $25/yr. It is a small group with perhaps 20 to 25 members. They have a hand-out sheet, a list on a web site, and a phone number to call. The web site had a info sheet to fill out, which was a great spam attractor. That is just changed. Not much business thru the CT group, but there is some. All in all, the IEEE Consultants Networks have changed my business from starvation to fairly good. I average a living wage because of it, and the contacts that have been generated...and the follow-on. I have given a presentation 8 times on how to be a consultant. Every time I say that the IEEE CN is the cheapest, most effective advertising, that I have found. Kathy and a number of others have responded to Amy's questions, with a good discussion of what HT can/will/should do for 'members', and exactly what 'members' means. This discussion will be continued in person in our Annual HT self-introspective session in Feb. Also, since Kathy (and a few others) mentioned that others can't really comment on Amy's request to remove the honorarium page unless they can see it, so we have left it up for a few weeks. Also, a clarification - that text on the page is exactly what Amy has in her company listing. In response, to Michael's comments - actually many people do 'register' to get a complete listing, because all registering does is allow you into the site for a full listing which prevents whole scale downloading of member information list. The list for which we have many requests, for the purpose of blant promotion. As for the need for a directory - very much so - first we need to settle what is for free and what is (paid) member only, which needs all your input. As for the overall site comments, keep them coming, a number of people have stepped up to do more work on the site and we need feedback from the whole HT community as to where to focus. And yes we are all very thankful for Amy's contributions and wish to properly thank her -- any other suggestions as to how ? There I saw three links related to your resignation and what looked like your standard short blurb used on programs for events meant to promote member organizations. And I can see why you are concerned it's not really the appropriate information for such a page. Better would be something more specific to the skills you brought to the formation of Hidden Tech and how they've helped shaped the organization. This mirrors more closely the policy used (or that I think is used - I could be ill-informed) for this list. Mentioning your service offerings while answering a related question is acceptable by posting an unrequested advertisement is not. While I commend you for your concern over the issue of personal promotion over that of other Hidden Tech companies, I would respectfully suggest that the maintainers of the site delay pulling the page as you requested for a week so that members interested in discussing the issue can see what's being discussed.
