Alan - if you can't empty the trash because of locked items, hold down 
the option key while emptying the trash and that should do it. As for 
your hard drive problem, I'd wholeheartedly recommend you get an 
external hard drive and backup your images and other large files to 
that. One good choice is the Maxtor One Touch drive, and a 200 GB 
version is available for under $200. I use it both to back up my files 
and to store stuff I don't want clogging up my internal drive.
