I can't vouch for them, and I hate to advertise for them, but walmart has sub 500 dollar pc's w/ linux installed on them. Not sure if they are available online or instore, but it's a thought. The little shuttle pc's also work with linux, I'd stay away from the nforce chipset ones at least for now- it seems that the nforce has more "issues" (fateh's is an nforce, though, and it does work) on newegg:. http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=56-101-215&depa=0 is ony 180: you still need to buy a harddrive/cdrom/ram/cpu, but I think you could do this easily for under 500, and I don't think this machine would have any issues whatsoever. In fact, I'd reccomend this over Wal-Mart since they tend to skimp on quality... oh another thing, make sure he doesn't get the latest P4 (prescott core) or celeron D, they don't work with this board (and they suck anyway) he should be fine (and save money) with an older celeron or P4 sorry, here's an amd one if he's an amd fan: http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=56-101-420&depa=0 By: Bassam Kurdali c/o Stanley Kowalski III SK3 Inc. Have bought both new and used, Mac & PC, and have not been burnt. It's really pretty amazing what you can find, with relatively little hassle, if you create customized searches. I always specify "Buy It Now" items, along with a price range and relevant keywords, etc. That way you don't have to hang around waiting for the auction to end... --Stephen Eldredge Gyepi SAM <gyepi-hidden-tec at praxis-sw.com> Sent by: hidden-discuss-bounces at lists.hidden-tech.net 02/01/2005 05:38 PM To: hidden-discuss at lists.hidden-tech.net cc: Subject: Re: [Hidden-tech] linux PCs On Tue, Feb 01, 2005 at 03:49:12PM -0500, Jonathan Dill wrote: > Hello folks, > > I'm looking for vendor / model recommendations to buy a Linux PC for > under $500 not including monitor. I recently acquired a few Pentium II's for about $50/each. Note that these are just the systems, no monitors or OS. Of course they are used, but for the price is perfect. And they do work! -Gyepi _______________________________________________ Hidden-discuss mailing list - home page: http://www.hidden-tech.net Hidden-discuss at lists.hidden-tech.net You are receiving this because you are on the Hidden-Tec Discussion list.
