+1 for Google Groups. My shared office space uses it. We only have a few emails a month, so I don't know how it compares to more bespoke platforms for larger volumes of activity, but it is free and easy to use. 10 or 15 years ago I went to pains (emphasis on pain) to setup a LISTSERV alternative. Don't remember now if it was open source, free, or just cheaper. It was a headache. They never even launched it, but it certainly would have required regular or occasional admin work. My recommendation is to use a prebaked solution. Depending on what your reasons are for fleeing Facebook, it's worth noting that Google is not really any better from a social responsibility angle.
