RedHat was never really interested in being a "household name", at least in the sense of the "desktop market". RedHat set its sights on the server and LTS business/engineering workstation market. It does well there. Ubuntu is pretty much the opposite (is some ways too much so). Ubuntu is pretty indifferent as a server -- yes it can be used that way, but it is not its strong suit. I use base Debian for my VPS now. Actually I use more or less base Debian on all of my machines (which at this point are all ARM based -- x86_64 systems are just too costly). For a "hard core" Linux user, Ubuntu is getting too much "like MS-Windows" in some ways. (Maybe a good thing for Linux newbies, maybe not.)
