[Hidden-tech] What to do with DVD-R

I have had to download various version of DVD readers in the past to watch different formatted version for a Law firm I did work for.

I have a sizeable (40) batch of DVD-R from a local venue we'd like to
pass to attendees.

I've found many are DVD-R that will not read in more recent players.
Anyone have experience with various versions of DVDs ?

Is this just an issue with computer drives ?

Any suggestions who can convert to a more recent format ?
Or to a digital drive ?

Any ideas would be helpful.
