Since you mention SSL - I wanted all to know about Let's Encrypt - 
https://letsencrypt.org/
It's a free SSL cert supported by the EFF and 
https://www.abetterinternet.org/
It's very automated - it's issues a 3 month certificate that is 
automatically updated.
Fairly simple process to install,  it even updates the server control file.

Only limit is you can only get 10 new certs every 10 hours, which is 
only an issue
If you have a large number to install when you start using it.
AND you do need root access to the web server config files.

For now, I'll leave the php to someone else, since I booked for now.
if it's still an issue in Jan, let me know
