[Hidden-tech] DNS Firewall

Two notes:

First, if the client in question used to enforce web filtering on their firewall in their office but now they have workers all working from home on laptops, that firewall web filter does no good, so adding a DNS filter for work laptops being used in a work from anywhere manner may not be a bad idea. However, having it provided by their web host seems like a bad idea. Security solutions shouldn’t be bought as one-offs, they should be part of an integrated security framework.

Second, there’s a lot of this sort of mining for security services happening to many businesses from different sorts of providers. We had a client contacted by their ISP saying they were seeing a high volume of DDoS attack attempts and they should add all of these optional security services to their internet subscription, all of which would have been redundant to solutions already in place. If you are working with a qualified IT services partner, have them make sense of these offers. Quite often they are unnecessary and will simply add expense with no added security to what’s already in place.

I don't know what your use case is, but my guess is just installing something like https://ublockorigin.com/<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__ublockorigin.com_&d=DwMDaQ&c=euGZstcaTDllvimEN8b7jXrwqOf-v5A_CdpgnVfiiMM&r=raMoF4Jb8CXlOoj19TB4z3jtPy-OVYgh5PVswfOgFQ4&m=TNwRpYOEH8lw5WSu6gUlynG0qRaCtnJuDVNla9JQR48&s=LUQUrlZHeetWkGlVxDLDQ6Y529nUgtXj7nohVslLkFU&e=> would be all you need. Unless you are doing something not in the browser or you are looking for a network wide firewall. That is when other tools may be more useful.

Hi folks,

Is a DNS firewall, rather than (or in addition to?) a plugin, a good idea these days? I’m doing research for a client who’s being upsold by their host company, and would also like the opinions of colleagues.

Thanks!!
