[Hidden-tech] Zoom vs. Hangouts ?

We've long used Google Hangout, and for over a year the Meet version of it in our paid GSuite account. Hangout supports 25 users at a time; Meet 250. Neiher have has ever terminated us after x minutes. They work great. If you use security software that indicates when an app communicates with outside servers, you'll find Zoom is doing so a lot, even if you're not using it. And Zoom requires that each person download and install an app, whereas I'm pretty sure Chrome supports Hangout natively. Both may require giving permission via any security software you use.

I didn't realize there were more comments below. I have no familiarity with the other platforms people recommended. Zoom has been around a while, and that means it's less likely to orphan us--but who knows?

I can't really discuss the technology, but I can tell you why I upgraded to the $15 (actually $16, with the tax) Zoom plan two weeks ago:

  1.  I don't really trust either Google or Facebook with my personal data. They know far too much already, and I'd rather be working with a company that is independent of them (and of Microsoft, so Skype is not my best choice either)
  2.  The interface is reasonably intuitive
  3.  In my experience, it is fairly robust. Yes, the connection will go funky sometimes, but much less often than Skype and without losing the call completely.
  4.  Recording option is built in (I had bought a stand-alone Skype recorder years ago)

BTW, if you only have one other person on the call, freebie Zoom DOESN'T cut off after 40 minutes. But if you have three or more, it does, and with no warning.

In the current climate, organizations are doing more virtual meetings. Because the length of our meetings tends to be more than 40 minutes, using Zoom for me would require a paid subscription; the next level above "Free" is $15/month. Someone suggested Google Hangouts. Is there also a threshold between free and paid? If there is, what is the basis? Number of participants, duration of conference, etc.? What's your experience?

Thanks for any info. Private response is OK, although perhaps other Hidden-Techies are facing the same type of choice.
