Has anyone read the science fiction short story "The Machine Stops" by E. M. Forster published in 1909, so well over 100 years ago. The story describes a world in which most of the human population has lost the ability to live on the surface of the Earth. Each individual now lives in isolation below ground in a standard room, with all bodily and spiritual needs met by the omnipotent, global Machine. Travel is permitted, but is unpopular and rarely necessary. Communication is made via a kind of instant messaging/video conferencing machine with which people conduct their only activity: the sharing of ideas and what passes for knowledge. -----Original Message----- From: Hidden-discuss <hidden-discuss-bounces at lists.hidden-tech.net> On Behalf Of Robert Heller via Hidden-discuss Sent: Wednesday, June 10, 2020 9:23 AM To: Tess Gadwa <info at yesexactly.com> Cc: Paul Bissex <paul.bissex at gmail.com>; Hidden-Tech Tech <hidden-discuss at lists.hidden-tech.net> Subject: Re: [Hidden-tech] Remote Work I wonder if anyone on this list has read the Asimov novel "The Naked Sun". It features a planet where the *human* residents rarely/never ever meet in person. Each *human* lives / works alone on a huge "estate" populated by thousands of robots and humans only ever meet using a super high tech / 3D version of something like Zoom.... (Somehow, despite virtually no pysical human interaction and with all of the robots under the 3 Laws, someone gets murdered so they have to import a detective from Earth to solve the crime...)
