I used OfficeTime (mac) for a while before switching to Harvest. Both have a desktop app timer that auto-detects inactivity in case you step away w/out turning off the timer. Both let you sync any timer to a project and generate basic reports, by project, clent etc. These are definitely both suitable for a freelancer, though Harvest is more expensive and may be overkill. FreshBooks also has timers, along w/ their accounting suite.
